The story of Monkey 47 began in July 1945, when Wing Commander Montgomery “Monty” Collins of the British Royal Air Force was posted to the British sector of divided Berlin. Having arrived in Berlin after the war, Commander Collins resolved to support the reconstruction of Germany in his free time after witnessing the extent of the destruction of the capital. He devoted his time to rebuilding the Berlin Zoo which he came to sponsor an egret monkey by the name of Max.

Collins left the British Royal Air Force in 1951 and moved to the Northern Black Forest region driven by his desire to learn the art of watchmaking. He showed little talent in horology and instead opened a country guesthouse and naming it “The Wild Monkey’, in honour of Max the monkey. The Black Forest region has always been known for distilling fruit liqueurs and Collins combined this history and his interest in gin to create Schwarzwald Dry Gin, which became the trademark spirit for the guesthouse until the 1970s.

Alexander Stein in 2006, almost four decades later rediscovered the story of Collins and wanted to revive the gin. Together with Christoph Keller, who was renowned for his fruit brandies began their journey to reborn Collins’ Black Forest Gin. With only rudimental records and no original recipe, the pair decided to recreate the gin as best they could.

After two years of development, Monkey 47 Gin was created by the pair. There are 47 ingredients in the Monkey 47 Gin recipe including lingonberries, spruce shoots, angelica root, acacia flowers, bramble leaves, all of which comes from the Black Forest.

Monkey 47 Dry Gin is an exquisite gin with 47 botanicals and although juniper is present, it is not nearly as dominant as much other traditional gins. Bottled at 47% ABV.

Clear with a slight glycerous appearance.

Powerful flavours of sweet berries, juniper and hints of pine and lavender.
