Description
The Founder of Johnnie Walker brand was John Walker, a grocer. Johnnie Walker originated in the Scottish burgh of Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire and is now owned by British multinational beverage company, Diageo. After the death of John Walker in 1859, the brand was taken over by his son, Alexander Walker, who helped turn it into the global super power that it is today. Under John Walker, whisky sales represented an estimated 8 percent of the Company’s income and by the time Alexander was retiring and ready to pass on the Company to his sons, that whisky sales figure represented 90 to 95 percent of the Company’s income.
Alexander Walker introduced the brand’s signature square bottle in 1860. This meant that more bottles could be fitted in the same space and fewer broken bottles due to damages. The other unique characteristics of Johnnie Walker bottle introduced by Alexander was and is still is, the labelling. The label is applied at an angle of 24 degrees upwards left to right which allowed texts to be made larger and more visible.
Johnnie Walker was originally launched in 1997 under the name Johnnie Walker Pure Malt 15 Years and later renamed to the current name in 2004. Diageo discontinued Green Label globally in 2012 except for Taiwan where demand for Blended Malts is strong. Green Label was finally reintroduced in 2016 and is now available globally after the reconstruction of the Johnnie Walker product range and introduction of Gold Label Reserve and Platinum Label (Platinum Label has been rebranded as Johnnie Walker 18 Years).
