Amrut is a brand of Indian single malt whisky produced by Amrut Distilleries and is the first single malt whisky to be made in India. Amrut comes from the Sanskrit word which translate to “nectar of the gods” and Amrut brand translate it as “elixir of life”. The brand became famous after whisky connoisseur Jim Murray gave the brand 82 out of 100 in 2005 and 2010.

Amrut single malt whisky is produced at Amrut’s main distillery which was built in 1987 and located in the village of Kambipura. Amrut single malt whisky are made from barley and in some variants, peated barley. Barley is procured from Haryana, Punjab and Rajastan while peated barley is imported from Scotland.

Due to India’s hotter climate, the duration of barrel-ageing for Amrut single malt whisky is much lower than that of Scotch whisky. The hotter weather makes the whisky mature faster in India than other countries with colder climate such as in Europe, United States and Scotland. Surinder Kumar, Master Blender at Amrut Distillery estimates that one year of barrel-ageing in India is equivalent to three years of ageing in Scotland.

As a result of the climate conditions in India, the whisky is ready to be bottled after four to five years of barrel-ageing. According to Master Blender Kumar, the whisky starts reaching its peak flavours in four years, after which it has to be tasted regularly because by five years, the whisky gets too much tannins from the barrels.

Amrut Single Malt is an Indian single malt whisky produced using a combination of barley grown in the North West of India. Matured in New American oak and Ex-Bourbon casks before bottling at 46% ABV.

Distinct aromas of liquorice-bourbon notes, burnt honeycomb and hint of toffee.
