Sure, regular parties playing Uno and drinking fruit smoothies are fun… when you’re a child! But as you age each year, coping with the crushing weight of reality, backaches, and the pesters from your family about when you’re getting married (this is absolutely NOT my personal experience), it sometimes helps when you have good quality alcohol to blow off all that steam.
This is Mr.Chow’s guide to some of the best alcohols you can bring to celebrate another year on this floating rock in space.
The last thing you want is to spend hundreds on a bottle the recipient won’t even like. This is why it’s important to consider what the birthday girl/boy would enjoy, instead of what YOU think qualifies as good alcohol. Besides that, having some foresight on how the party will turn out would definitely help as well.
These questions make a good starter thought:
Depending on who the birthday boy/girl is, the preferred alcohol could be beer, wine, champagne, spirits, or even cocktails. Take a look at which to opt for:

If your party is food-heavy and drinks are just a companion, you’re going to want something easy to drink that won’t fill people up. Cue Budweiser, the world’s best-selling beer, is also known as the king of beers. Budweisers are crisp and refreshing with a gentle sweetness and ever so barely bitter at times – perfect to pair with typically high salt and oil party food.

Ready to impress the guests? Make Sangria! Consisting of wine, a sweetener (optional), liqueur, soda/mixer, and fruit, Sangria is as sweet as you make it. This is why a solid dry red wine is needed as a base to keep that sugar content down. The classic choice is to go for a Spanish red wine such as Rioja or a Tempranillo-based wine, but it’s just as acceptable to opt for something else. Our pick would be the Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir 2019.

Have you seen how Koreans open a soju bottle? Even the pre-drink ritual is enough to convince you that this spirit is going to be a good time. Better yet, soju is incredibly versatile as a base in cocktails. You can mix soju with beer, sprite, Yakult, sprite + Yakult + Melona ice cream bars, and many more to create the ultimate birthday concoction. Chow recommends Jinro’s plum flavour to drink on its own, and the original or strawberry flavour to mix.

Who needs a birthday cake when you have birthday cake martinis? Albeit, more work goes into making them, it’ll still be worth your time. Using vodka, coconut cream (santan works), liqueur, and honey to assemble a creamy spirit-infused treat. Check out the recipe here.

Want something honest, yet not boring? Tequila’s your guy for a night that will never run dry. Tequila has a unique flavour profile, ranging from smooth and earthy to vibrant and citrusy, adding a touch of excitement to the celebration. Pick up a nice bottle of Don Julio or Voilaa Tequila for the night, why don’t you? No more awkward happy birthday songs, only loud and joyous incoherent cheers.
P.S. Don’t forget to pack the lime and salt!
There you go! You’re now ready to give your friends or yourself a banging bottle of booze for their birthday. If there’s any way to celebrate another year of life, this is definitely one of them.
