Description
Talisker Distiller was founded by a pair of brothers, Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill, in the year 1830. The distillery produces Island single malt Scotch whisky and is located in Carbost, Scotland on the Isle of Skye.
The distiller operates two wash stills and three spirit stills, totalling five stills. To give the whisky a more full-bodied flavour, the distillery uses condensing coils rather than the modern condenser. The distiller was rebuilt once in 1960 after a stillhouse fire completely destroyed it. Even after the fire, five exact replicas of the original stills were constructed to continue to produce a highly individual new make that mixes smoke, fruit, sulphur, salt and pepper. The malt is medium-peated, the wort clear, the fermentation long. In contrast to most distilleries where the spirit stills are the workhorses, at Talisker, the second distillation takes place in small plain stills, again with worm tubs.Â
Talisker distillery mainly uses American oak casks to mature their whisky. Their water source comes from Cnoc nan Speireag, Hawk Hill, a spring directly above the distiller. The malted barley used in production comes from Muir of Ord. Talisker brand and distillery is owned by Diageo since 1997.
Talisker Storm is a no age statement whisky released in early 2013 that has been selectively matured in refill and toasted American oak casks. Talisker Storm is smoky and peppery similar to the characteristics of Talisker 10 Years but Talisker Storm has been turned up a notch with more smoke, more spice and bigger stronger flavours. Bottled at 45.8% ABV.
