Description
Cooley Distillery is an Irish whisky producer located in Cooley Peninsula in County Louth, Ireland. Entrepreneur John Teeling converted an old potato alcohol plant into Cooley Distillery in 1987. The distillery is owned and operated by Beam Suntory since 2011 and is a subsidiary of Suntory Group in Japan. Since the change of ownership to Suntory, visitor access to the distillery is limited and public tours are not available.
John Teeling bought the former State-owned potato schnapps distillery in 1985 and less than 2 years, was converted to Cooley Distillery with two-column stills. In 1998, one year after opening, Cooley received a trophy at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) for outstanding quality. Cooley was the first distillery to be awarded this trophy.
Following the sales of Cooley Distillery in 2011, John Teeling established a new distillery named Teeling Distillery, located in the town of Dundalk, under the Teeling Whisky Company. Teeling acquired stocks from Cooley under the terms of the sale agreement with Beam.
Connemara Peated Irish whisky is unique because Irish whisky is traditionally unpeated. Peat is native to Ireland and the first peated Irish whisky was introduced during the collaboration of Cooley Distillery and Scottish distiller Gordon Mitchel. Connemara Peated Irish whisky is a blend of aged whisky namely 4 years, 6 years and 8 years. The 4 Years give the whisky a level of vibrancy, while the 8 Years adds depth and the 6 Years is needed to marry the blend together during maturation in the barrels. Bottled at the standard 40% ABV.
